Best engineering courses in India

Engineering courses are most sought after career path in the job market. Nearly 1.6Lacs students are pursuing engineering in India. The abundant number of engineering colleges in India offer an array of courses to make engineering graduate industry ready. The Government of India "Make in India" initiative is also tipped to provide a great Philip to the engineering career in India. The recent budget had also stressed on making India a manufacturing hub by creating 1crore jobs in India. If the one crore job creation becomes a reality then major chuck of the job creation should come to Manufacturing, Infrastructure and service sector.

If the manufacturing sectors is given a push then the ITIs, Polytechnics and Engineering grads will have a major share in jobs. Let us look at the best engineering courses that will pave a bright career to you.

1. CSE (Computer science & Systems Engineering) / Information Technology

In this IT and Internet driven world CSE and IT have abundant scope to secure jobs in any sector in any part of the world. Be it an enterprise or an individual we cannot imagine our world with out computers and Internet. The rapid development of the mobile solutions has also created more depth into the CSE and IT engineering courses. CSE  & IT is highly rewarding if you are technically ready with current technologies. CSE or IT can be highly insecure sector if you are a not a constant learner, you might had heard several times that MNCs like TCS, IBM, HP had layed off employees who are marked as not industry ready.

However the text book languages and tools that you are going to learn in engineering will not make you industry ready, it is advised to keep a track on new technology developments. You have to learn current trending software applications and technologies outside your college. The process of monitoring your industry should start from 2nd year itself to make you robust by time you reach final year of your graduation.

CSE & IT sector is most dynamic and volatile in nature as technologies and processes tend to change every 6months to 1year. As a CSE or IT engineer you have to be in tune with current changes taken place in the industry. A technology which is in demand now might got outdated in the next 5years a new version might had been already floating in the industry for which companies will start looking out for professionals who are equipped with the same. So if you skills are marked as outdated who will be left out in the race.

2. Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE):

ECE and allied courses are back bone to support IT and ITES sectors. While the software and application development sectors needs CSE & IT engineers, Electronics engineers drive the IT & ITES sectors by providing essential hardware components to drive the IT systems. After IT & ITES sector Electronics Engineers are highly paid in the industry. If you have an additional expertise in VLSI, CCNA etc your will be hot pick in the market.

Conventional Engineering courses: Civil, Mechanical and Electrical are core engineering courses which are most essential to drive economic growth of India. A student with minimum 60% marks with an interest in academics and inclination towards Sate and Central PSUs jobs should focus on brushing the fundamentals of their respective engineering courses to crack the exams. High academic performance may also ensure that you are called by big IT or NON IT MNCs in India for a great career with them. If you opt for an NON IT/NON-Automation related  careers you may need to sweat outdoors but you may earn good money as you climb up the ladder. Let us see the course prospects one by one:

3. Electrical and Electronics Engineering:

Electrical Engineering graduates are alrounders. They have an option to choose careers related to their own core Electrical domain or to choose IT/Electronics related field. Electricals are in huge demand from their core sector "Power" where there are Maharatna companies like NTPC, Powergrid Corp and PSUs like State power and distribution corporations. Apart from this conventional electrical companies like Siemens, ABB are big MNCs can offer a good career options for electrical engineers. A first class Electrical Engineering student can first try for PSU careers by applying GATE and appearing for Management Trainee exams.

4. Mechanical Engineering:

Mech Engineers are heart for any manufacturing sector. Any manufacturing or product development company will require Mechanical engineers. Mechanical Engineering are required for production, operations and maintenance departments in any industrial unit. Highly payed jobs can be secured in Automotive, Steel, Shipping, Defence and Oil and Natural gas companies.

5. Civil Engineering:

Infrastructure is one of the core sectors for any country with Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering departments are vital to drive this sector. Civil engineers with average academics and minimum experience can never struggle for job in the open market. Good academic performers with high technical skills can become Architects, Consultants and Builders with great pay. Average performers can always build their career joining any MNCs or PSUs as per their perseverance. Main challenge with core civil sector is that you have to slog outside in the open air battling pollution etc. A career in this requires you to be mobile and demands you to work at uncomfortable terrains like remote locations.

6. Agriculture Engineering:

Thou this course is hardly heard among engineering circles Agricultural engineering offers a careers in all State PSUs Agriculture departments and Agricultural organisations. Securing PSU job with Agriculture degree is much easy that securing job with other conventional engineering courses. There are very minimum number of colleges that offer Engineering  in Agricultural sciences but once you are done with your degree you have many options to choose from Banks, Government organisations and MNCs like Monsanto, Dow etc.

Apart from this major courses in engineering thee are some Sub category courses that were created to prepare industry specific engineering graduates like, Petroleum engineering specific to Oil and Natural gas sector, Metallurgy Engineering specific to Mining and Geology based sectors, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering specific to Automation in manufacturing sector, Industrial Engineering and Management to drive and manage industries, Aero Space Engineering specific to Aviation industry, Marine Engineering specific to Shipping Industry.

All the courses mentioned above always have job avenues but how best we are equipped to grab the job will differentiate you from huge crowd coming out from various engineering colleges every year.

How to choose a good engineering college

Engineering is a dream career before late 90s. Engineering courses were in great demand in south and North has also its share in enticing students interest towards engineering courses. Every year nearly 16Lacs engineering students graduate out of colleges with poor employability. Considering the student point of view I would like to mention a few points below which should be checked before choosing an engineering college.

Location of the college: An engineering college near to an industrial area of SEZ will be an edge to your career path as companies may tend to recruit engineers from colleges near to their location. A city like Bangalore widely termed as Silicon Valley of India is best suited for IT & Computer science candidates. Chennai, Delhi-NCR being a manufacturing hub for Automotive and other sectors will be best for core engineering courses like mechanical and civil.

Industry tie-ups: Many engineering college tie up with Government and private companies to nurture students to make students employable in their firms.

Employability of the course: Can the course offer immediate career opportunities i.e manufacturing, IT & ITES sectors can immediately absorb people as interns and trainees.

Jobs trending more in the job market i.e IT & ITES Jobs, Management Trainees jobs at PSUs and at reputed MNCs

Sectors offering stability: Course that can offer a steady sustainable career path i.e the job at core PSU companies like NPTC, BHEL, IOCL,HPCL etc

The tieups will be of different types
  • Technology sharing tieups with Microsoft, Cognizant etc
  • Placement oriented tieups with different companies for extending internships and jobs
  • Government Organizations for career development - Jawaharlal Nehru knowledge centers.
  • University tieups for Faculty exchange and knowledge sharing

Faculty: It was proven in many states that the medicore performers in engineering who could not crack any job tend to opt for faculty jobs in engineering colleges. Engineering colleges also tend to succumb to the greedy desire to save on investing on hiring and developing faculty in their organizations’.

Below table depicts the scale of significance for different points to look into before choosing an Engineering courses.
