How to choose a good engineering college

Engineering is a dream career before late 90s. Engineering courses were in great demand in south and North has also its share in enticing students interest towards engineering courses. Every year nearly 16Lacs engineering students graduate out of colleges with poor employability. Considering the student point of view I would like to mention a few points below which should be checked before choosing an engineering college.

Location of the college: An engineering college near to an industrial area of SEZ will be an edge to your career path as companies may tend to recruit engineers from colleges near to their location. A city like Bangalore widely termed as Silicon Valley of India is best suited for IT & Computer science candidates. Chennai, Delhi-NCR being a manufacturing hub for Automotive and other sectors will be best for core engineering courses like mechanical and civil.

Industry tie-ups: Many engineering college tie up with Government and private companies to nurture students to make students employable in their firms.

Employability of the course: Can the course offer immediate career opportunities i.e manufacturing, IT & ITES sectors can immediately absorb people as interns and trainees.

Jobs trending more in the job market i.e IT & ITES Jobs, Management Trainees jobs at PSUs and at reputed MNCs

Sectors offering stability: Course that can offer a steady sustainable career path i.e the job at core PSU companies like NPTC, BHEL, IOCL,HPCL etc

The tieups will be of different types
  • Technology sharing tieups with Microsoft, Cognizant etc
  • Placement oriented tieups with different companies for extending internships and jobs
  • Government Organizations for career development - Jawaharlal Nehru knowledge centers.
  • University tieups for Faculty exchange and knowledge sharing

Faculty: It was proven in many states that the medicore performers in engineering who could not crack any job tend to opt for faculty jobs in engineering colleges. Engineering colleges also tend to succumb to the greedy desire to save on investing on hiring and developing faculty in their organizations’.

Below table depicts the scale of significance for different points to look into before choosing an Engineering courses.
